The Bible says that all things were made by Jesus Christ who created everything out of nothing: “All things were made by him and without him was not any thing made that was made.” Colossians 1:16 Pictures Are Not Graven Images The second part of this verse says that if you do make graven images, God will visit the iniquity of your fathers upon you unto the third generation. This commandment is still in effect today and should be obeyed by all believers in Jesus Christ. The first commandment of God is for you to not make graven images. You shall not bow down to them or serve them for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God… Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. In summary: The First Commandment tells us not only not to make idols but also not eat them when they are offered on an altar! Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth It also forbids bowing down before these things this was often done by worshippers who wanted to show respect for their gods.* The Bible uses the word “idol” to refer to everything that people made for themselves, including statues and paintings-anything that could be seen as a representation or symbol of something else (like God). It forbids worshiping an image as if it were God, which was common among ancient peoples. The first commandment is about graven images and idolatry. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything high above the earth or in heaven.” It says, “You shall have no other gods before me. The First Commandment is the first of the Ten Commandments. Graven images are also forbidden by God throughout the Old Testament and by Jesus Christ in New Testament times. The Ten Commandments forbid anyone to make any image or likeness of anything in heaven or on earth, or in the waters below. The first commandment forbids anyone to make graven images. Graven images are forbidden in the Bible.
